Widows ground Onitsha over sacked female LG chairman

Several hundreds of protesting women on Monday paralised business activities at the Onitsha South Local Government Area secretariat, protesting last week’s impeachment and removal of the Chairman of the council, Mrs. Ann Chukwuneke.
The women, who arrived the council headquarters, Woliwo, Onitsha at about 7am, carried placards with inscriptions, ‘Order the return of Ann Chukwuneke as our council boss’,  ‘NCWS, pls look into the problems of this woman, Ann Chukuneke’, and ‘Widows of Onitsha South, support Lady Ann and her administration’.
The women, who claimed to be widows, sang solidarity songs and rained curses on those who planned the removal of the local government chairman.
The leader of the protesters, Mrs. Martha Anozie said Chukwuneke, as a widow, had supported the cause of widows in the area and pleaded with the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, not to join in the witch hunt of the woman.
Another protester, Madam Lucy Obieze, 75, in tears, pleaded with the governor to allow Chukwuneke to continue her job as an elected local government chairman.
Chukwuneke, who later on addressed the protesters, said she was surprised at her purported illegal impeachment by some councilors.
She attributed her ordeal to some unscrupulous politicians who were bent on discrediting her for their own selfish ends.
