National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday arraigned a Lagos businessman, Emeka Obi, at the Federal High Court, Lagos over illegal importation and dealing in banned soap products.
The accused was slammed with a two-count charge by the agency.
After the charge was read to him before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, he pleaded not guilty.
As a result, Justice Aneke remanded him in prison and adjourned his trial to December 5.
According to the charge endorsed by the prosecution, Umar Shamaki, the accused committed the offence at the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos.
Count one reads: “That you Emeka Obi of D55, Oyo Plaza, Trade Fair Complex, Lagos within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court on or about 1st day of August, 2014 imported Betasol Lotion 30ml and Funbeaut-A Triple Action Complexion Soap 80g concealed with personal effect in a 1 x 40ft groupage container (CMAU 521930/4) through SDV/SCOA Terminal, KLT Lagos and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 of the Food, Drugs and Related Products (Registration etc.) Act, Cap F33, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and punishable under Section 6(1)(a) of the same Act.”
Count two says: “ That you Emeka Obi of D55, Oyo Plaza, Trade Fair Complex, Lagos within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court on or about 1st day of August, 2014 imported Betasol Lotion 30ml and Funbeaut-A Triple Action Complexion Soap 80g concealed with personal effect in a 1 x 40ft groupage container (CMAU 521930/4) through SDV/SCOA Terminal, KLT Lagos and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(a) of Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act Cap C34 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and punishable under Section 3(1)(a) of the same Act.
