The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Lagos commenced the three weeks orientation course for the 2014 Batch B Stream II corps members, with females dominating the exercise.
Out of 2,018 corps members deployed to the state for the exercise and took the oath of allegiance at the Iyana-Ipaja orientation campground, only 777 were male while 1,501 were female.
Addressing the corps members at the swearing-in ceremony for the commencement of the orientation programme, State Coordinator, NYSC, Adenike Adeyemi, welcomed the young graduates “on board the boat that signifies patriotism, commitment, efficiency, integrity and team work.”
According to her, the orientation course has four key features: “The orientation course, primary assignment, community development service, the winding up and passing out exercise”.
“You shall, in the next three weeks be subjected to paramilitary drills, man-o-war training, physical fitness exercise, un-armed combat and martial arts, lectures on security, national consciousness, volunteerism, disease control, advocacy programme of national interest, skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development,” she said.
The set of corps members presently at the camp were the first set of the 2014 batch, divided into two groups, as part of measures by the Federal Government to contain the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease (EBD) that broke in Nigeria through Lagos State.
Speaking on the issue of the N4,000 on-line registration of corps members, the coordinator said it was put in place to check the hazards of travelling far distances to pick up call-up letters, which was acceptable to some while others who lived nearer to their alma mater simply went to pick theirs in person.
